{Employment} Past, Present, Future

I must admit this post turned out different than I originally intended. I also, started writing this in August, but it really couldn't have been finished until now anyway. I needed the reminder at the end to trust God.

As of this summer I will have been in the adult workforce for 16 years. A year and a half ago I passed up the longest-I've-been-at-the-same-employer, milestone. It's hard for me to believe that I've been doing the same job for 6 1/2 years.

With that in mind, here's a look at my job history since I graduated college in 1998:

  • 3 years as the middle school secretary for 550 kids - living on Guam, right after college
  • 1 year floating between an insurance company in Kansas and temp work in Minneapolis
  • 5 years at MBU (formerly MBBC) and Upper Krust (the Pie Shop) with random odd-jobs thrown in now and then
  • 7 years (June 2014) as a client service associate at theJob (As previously stated, I try to keep the name of my current place of employment and co-workers's names off the blog.)

This past August I was told of a potential change from my current position, but we first had to hire someone to replace me. Initially we thought it would be easy because they offered the job to someone who applied for another position but the person turned it down. It actually took two months to find the new hire, and then we waiting another three months for them to actually start working. Her first day was January 2nd.

My new position was supposed to be mostly projects and the like, but over the past five months (or maybe from the beginning??!), my boss got a great idea for me to become an OSJ, a designated supervisor for all things compliance. He told me of his great idea during my annual review in December, which was about two weeks before the new person started.

Basically an OSJ is the person who approves the securities business that our firm processes. Maybe it doesn't sound so complicated to you, but I will have to take several tests and go through hours of studying. At one point I will be sent off to a class to help me prepare for one of the big tests.

None of my new job responsibilities are to begin until the new girl is well on her way to being trained. The training will take a couple, a few, several months. The timeline is a little unclear at this time, but the sooner I get her trained, the sooner I get to start studying. THEN, the sooner I pass all the tests, the sooner I get a raise.

How 'bout that?! A raise! So that's exciting, eh?!

My boss is proposing for this to all be in place by July. I have my doubts, but he is a very optimistic person and I'm more of a pragmatist (defined as a practical person).

(Random Fact: the new girl's name is my name just spelled with Cs and no K.)

So there you have it: my new job is just around the bend and will probably be happening about the time I'm 16 years into the workforce. Looking back at how far I've come I think this is a pretty good place to be. Could I- would I- should I have done things differently to get where I am? Maybe. But for me, I'm trusting that God had me in the various jobs and places to use me for His purpose.

I'm definitely challenged as I look at my present situation (training the new girl) and my near future transition (studying, testing, learning), and I need to trust God to bring me through these challenges and to bring honor to Himself.

{It's a Boy!} New Addition for Jess & Luke

As you know, Jess & Luke have been fostering 3 boys since March 2012. There was a brief, 3-week time when they did not have the boys as they had been placed back with their family. Shortly after the time the boys came back for a 2nd placement, Jess & Luke found out that the birth mom was expecting #7. Sometime after that, the birth mom and dad asked Jess & Luke to adopt the new baby.

And now introducing...

Baby J Forman

  • Born on Monday, September 9th @ 1:54 pm - 5 lb 13 oz, 19 inches
  • Proud Mom and Dad: Jess & Luke Forman - my sister & brother-in-law
  • Proud Brothers: E(4 ½), V (2 ½), F (1 ½) - my foster nephews
  • J was released from the hospital Wednesday late afternoon just over 48 hours from his birth.
  • Grandma was able to be here to help for the first two weeks.

{5K - Made It!}

Well, I did it: my first 5K event is complete. Our group included Jen, Eric, Tim Emslie and Tim's father-in-law. I was the only walker in the group.

To be honest it would have been more fun if others would have walked with me. It was supposed to be this big thing and then one-by-one people dropped out...so I walked. Alone. Generally that's not a problem for me as that's how I usually walk, but after the throng of runners and joggers got far ahead of me, it got kind of tough to just keep plugging away on my own.

I was surprised a bit by how much this bothered me. Part of me wished I would have tried running, but I knew my running wouldn't last more than 30 seconds (I may have tested it out recently), so I just kept my steady pace and kept moving forward (I also struggled with shin pain for the first mile and a half). I preferred to finish instead of letting strangers find me on the side of the road - you're welcome!

According to my Endomondo Sports Tracker, I finished 3.15 miles in 51:05 minutes. My average pace was 16:14 minutes per mile. No 13 minute miles like I was hoping for.

Thanks to everyone for cheering me on even if most was from a distance!

Thanks to Jen for encouraging me to try something new!

After we cleaned up from the 5k, we went over to Jen & Eric's old neighborhood to sit with their friends at the Hanover Harvest Festival Parade. It was a perfect day for a parade.

The kids enjoy collecting candy tossed from the floats. One of the karate groups was passing out tote bags so the kids had even better candy bags than the usual plastic Walmart bag they bring!

A trip to Culver's was in order after the parade was done. Then it was time to go home and enjoy the breeze with the windows open while taking a nap!

Here are a few pics:

 After. Still smiling!

Also after - Jen and Eric with Tim off to the side.

Oops! Morgen's finger got in the way.

Ethan, Morgen, Erin, Megan, & Carsten all lined up to get candy at the parade!

Car Shopping, Part 2

Continuing the story of my quest for a new car...

As I mentioned in Part 1, I had intended to go shopping, but got sick. The cough that had kept me in lasted through the first part of the week and while I did go to work, I didn't really feel like doing anything else. By Friday I had mentioned to a couple people at work that I was going car shopping on the weekend so I was pretty much committing myself to the quest.

Throughout the past year or so my dad has been telling me he'd like to see me drive a Ford Fusion. While I wasn't opposed to the idea, I really never did any searches for a Fusion until Friday night. I crashed at my sister's house to use some Internet and began a hunt for cars and to try to make some kind of plan of attack for Saturday.

Now normally I like to sleep in until I wake up on days that I don't have to be anywhere at any appointed time, but late in my search I had emailed one of the dealers in regards to a 2010 Fusion I found online. Since I didn't know when they would call me, I planned to be up and ready by 9 when the dealerships opened. I had also emailed myself 6 different cars that I wanted to look at. They were at several different dealerships so that was another reason I would need to start early.

Sure enough on Saturday morning I got a call from a salesman at 9:03. Since I wasn't quite ready for the day I made an appointment with him at 10 am. A bit later I saw an email on my phone from the same dealership but a different salesman.

When I arrived at the Ford dealer I wasn't able to speak with the person who had called, but I did get the person who had emailed me. We began our conversation and he seemed nice enough. We discussed that I was looking for a used Fusion with low mileage and I told him the specific car I had found online.

He then took me out on a walk through the lot and eventually a test drive. At some point he asked me what amount of monthly payment I was looking for, but instead of answering his question directly I told him the dollar amount of the car ($10-12k) and he indicated he understood. I really don't know if this is where I went wrong or not, but from what happened later, I think it is.

After test driving a used Fusion and more discussion, he had me drive a brand new Focus. It was a dream - with all the bells and whistles - technology is great, huh?! He must have thought he had me - I was gushing and excited about it  :-) When we returned from the test drive, the salesman had the finance guy figure out what they would give me for my trade-in and then run the numbers.

At this point he had been back and forth from his desk to the finance guys enough that I had been able to text my family and that started the support from afar. Which totally helped me get through what happened next.

When he told me my trade-in value was $100, I just laughed! I knew my car was in rough shape, but I really thought $500 would be the lowest. Oh, and then the best monthly payment on the page was $310, the worst $330. Um, not even close to my $200 so I told him that if he could get to $200 we would be somewhere. I kind of shocked myself at how direct and specific I was.

At this point he said he was sorry that he hadn't asked me for the goal of my monthly payment previously (even though he had) and he said he was not wanting me to get excited about a car that was not going to work for my budget. He then went back to work on his computer to find me a used vehicle that he thought I would be more comfortable with.

We went and test drove a red Cobalt Chevy and a black 2011 Ford Focus. Ewwhhh...on the Cobalt! It was like driving a cardboard box (or a Plymouth Reliant - good comparison, huh, Jen?!). No offense to anyone who has a Cobalt, but this ride was not for me. On to the Focus. It had a closer feel to the Fusion I had already driven, but the size was more like Jess's Mazda3, and I felt comfortable in it; however, it had two major flaws in my book: manual transmission, no cruise control. The best thing was that the mileage was under 10k.

As I was thinking about the test drive and still sitting in the Focus, the salesman went to park the Cobalt. When he got back in I proposed that he throw in cruise control and I would consider overlooking the manual transmission. He said why don't we pull the car back up to the front and we can go in and run some numbers.

While I waited I was able to get in more texting and some phone calls to family members.

The numbers came back at $234 as best and $276 as worst (different lengths of loan, estimated APR, cash down amount...). By this time I felt a little more experienced in looking at the numbers and we discussed how the interest rate was a just a estimate and we wouldn't know the real rate until I decided that I wanted to buy the car and they would send my info to banks. I felt pretty confident that the rate would be lower, I just didn't know how much lower. Oh, and to get the better numbers they had upped my trade-in value to $500.

The salesman said I should take the car on my own and let my family take a look and see what they said. I agreed that this was a good idea so I headed out. By this time it was almost 1pm. 3 hours at one dealer was a long time, I was getting weary.

Everyone who saw the car seemed to like it. We discussed some pros and cons, but no one seemed to have anything negative to say about the car. I went back to the dealership with one thought: I don't like driving stick all the time. It's fun for a minute, but not all around town and in winter...

Determined not to buy a car on my first day out, I went back to the dealership to return the Focus and see what their best offer would be. After 2 more tries (picture me pushing the paper back toward them and saying, "try again"), they came back with their "final and best" offer of $205/mo at 1.99% APR including cruise control as I requested. I thanked them and said I would let them know on Monday as I wanted to sleep on it.

It was now about 3pm. I wasn't sure what my next move would be, but I had learned dealerships closed at 6 on Saturday so I was running out of daylight if I was going to check out any of the other cars that I had picked out Friday night.

As this is getting quite lengthy, I think I'll save the rest for another post. Sorry, but there will be Part 3 to this car quest!

Shopping for a New Car, Part 1

Two years ago at the end of this month, my 1996 Chrysler Sebring (aka Sylvia Sebring) took her last extended road trip. Well, attempted road trip - a shredded tire changed those plans for me. Last December my parents moved to Spooner, WI, a mere 2 hour drive away. I did make a couple of trips to see them, but even those trips came to a halt as it became apparent my car would not be around much longer. The most obvious issue was the hole in the muffler - obvious by the sound of the car, not that you can see the hole... :)

Anyone who reads my blog or talks to me for any length of time knows that I have two concerns: getting out of debt and buying a new car. Thankfully last year I was able to get out of the dumb-debt (aka credit card) and this year I'm working on eliminating the smart-debt (aka school loan); however, the need for a new car has been weighing on me even more than the last of my smart-debt. (I'm not saying that I'm comfortable with my smart-debt. I plan to continue to eliminate that as quickly as I can.)

So since this need of a new car has become all-consuming, I dropped hints, asked out-right, and was just short of begging family members to go car shopping with me. None of them volunteered. None were available. No one would go.

I realized a few weeks ago that this was a venture that would fall completely on my shoulders. It wasn't something that I knew anything about and I because I would be financing the car, I really was scared of the commitment. So many questions - how do you tell the sales guy you only want to spend under $200 per month? Is $200 a month even going to get me much of a car? how will I withstand the pressure to not get sucked into an expensive lease on a snazzy new car?

With the little that I did know about car shopping I had looked online a few times, but what I like, were those real options for me?  The longer I looked and the more I worked the numbers in my budget, the more I was convinced that $200 was the magic number. (My intention has been that when I pay off my student loan I will use that money to make increased payments on my car; therefore I would shorten my loan.)

A couple weekends ago I fully intended to go car shopping and even thought that it might workout to go an evening sometime during the week. Well, that weekend I got sick and didn't go shopping because I was home in bed.

Come back later for Shopping for a New Car, Part 2.

We did manage to squeeze some fun in though, eh?! (Bowling, pictures, presents and more!) Thanks for the framed song, I’m still deciding where to hang it, but I think I’ll put it next to the quilt hanging that matches my bed quilt.

Lots of love, b~

P.S I can hardly believe it, but I forgot a thank you note!

Dear Luke - please forgive me for not remembering to write a thank you for the Bath & Body gift card you gave me for Christmas! Oh, trust me, I've already spent it! stocking upon lotions and soap, of course! Thank you, thank you!!

giving thanks - a little inspiration

Being home sick isn't always fun. So today in between my cups of hot tea & honey, rest, and what seems like gallons of Airborne or Emergen-C, I was inspired by a craft. Now I'm not generally a crafty person, but I do subscribe to a few blogs that contain a little crafty work and a lot of creativity.

Probably at the end of September I pulled out my box of fall decor and put out what I wanted to use this year. I didn't go overboard (not that I ever do)--just a few candles, a wreath, and a "welcome home" door decoration. I thought that was good enough.

Then I read this blog post today and also had a little time on my hands. You can read here more detailed instructions from the blog that inspired my "Give Thanks" banner. My simple version is this: use 4 kinds of decorated 8 1/2 x 11 paper cut into 4ths, print 3" white, outlined letters, color letters with marker, and arrange paper order before applying letters with a glue stick. Punch two holes at the top and string ribbon through. Seems easy, right? It was.

What inspires you?

bright business

Updated 7/31/09

7/30/09 Well, the end of July is almost here and as promised here's an update on how I did in my first month in PartyLite.

I started off really well since my first Show ended up being my highest Show: sales = $369. This was really an overflow of my starter Show, but I'm thankful that even though there many couldn't come to the Starter Show they were still able to help me get started on this new venture.

My second show was also a catalog show with my mom as the hostess. I brought my FREE kit down to my mom & dad's and had a little mini-show for my dad, mom and two sisters. My mom then worked all month to sell candles for me. The totals of that Show are not yet finalized. Stay tuned for those results!

Update: The results are in!! Mom's Show sales were $299. It was so exciting to see this number grow throughout the deadline day. I had to submit the show on the 31st by 11 pm. I posted the original blog entry on Thursday and on Friday morning I let everyone know on Facebook how much I needed. It was so exciting to see the numbers go up and by 3pm I had reached my goal!!! My mom's Show did have a little help from two of my co-workers and my lil sis, Anna; their orders helped me go OVER the goal amount! I also had many words of encouragement from friends via Facebook. Thank you, family, friends and co-workers! Most of all, thanks to God for allowing me to earn extra money and for giving me encouraging family, friends and co-workers!

My third Show was with a gal from church. With only 3 in attendance we managed to squeak out $231 in Show sales, plus two future bookings.

My fourth Show was with my sister, Jen. Again, we only had three guests in attendance, but I did get a booking! That Show totaled $190.

My fifth Show included a trip to Watertown, WI. I had fun seeing old friends and the Show went well with about 8 in attendance and one booking. The Show totaled $313.

My sixth Show was actually a Fundraiser for Metro Women's Center. There was really only one seller and she was only able to sell for about 2 weeks. Her Show total was $140 and 1/2 of that goes directly to Metro Women's Center. The remaining $70 goes towards my sale totals. I hope we can do a larger scale Fundraiser for this organization in the near future.

So now I'm doing the math, and it looks like $227 is the magic number. I have to turn in that much by tomorrow by 11pm to qualify for PartyLite's BriteStart Month 1. My sale totals would then be $1400 and my team leader would really like me to reach that goal. Anyone interested in helping me reach this goal go to www.partylite.biz/bekahflaming. Only 148 shopping days until Christmas!

I'm really excited to go to our next team meeting (Aug 4th) with my "qualifying" numbers. You know, of course, that I get more FREE candles if I meet my goal this month! And if I meet the BrightStart goal the next two months, I also get more compensation. You might remember that one of my main reasons for joining PartyLite was to use the extra income to pay off a little debt and I'd really enjoy taking more trips to see family & friends!

This month was a success in my book. I met many new friends and enjoyed fellowship with many long-time (and many newer) friends. I hope I was a reflection of the Light to those I interacted with along the way.

this and that...time to catch up, continued

As promised I'm working on posting some pics and happenings that I'm very late in blogging about:

Kitchen Happenings
Back in April, I think, I was cooking dinner for me and Jess one night. When I glanced in the oven where I had chicken baking, I noticed a shadow in the middle of the pan, but didn't think anything about it really...until I took a second look, that is. Here's what I found:

From Pampered Chef Stone

Note: this large bar pan is a stone from Pampered Chef and is generally under warrenty, but of course, I've had the pan longer than the warrenty covers... :( I did end up ordering another one since I've been lost in my kitchen without it! I used it for everything!!

More to come!

Bekah's Bright New Venture

Hey, there family & friends!

Just wanted to share with you what I'm up to these days!

I just completed my 2nd year here at theJob* in downtown Minneapolis and still love the challenge of the job and the fact that I live near 2 out of 3 sisters, plus my niece and nephews. Oh, and of course the 2 B-I-L's (brother-in-laws).

Due to the economy, my job (and maybe yours?) was affected by a reduction of both pay and hours beginning April 1st. To offset the financial reduction and keep up with my previously set goals, I applied for a few local part-time jobs when I found out in March, but had no success. Around that time I received an invite to a PartyLite show with a friend from church. I had already been tossing around the idea of selling Pampered Chef, Tastefully Simple, or something similar so I decided to go the party to find out about selling PartyLite.

So the party was fun, I liked the products I saw, and then I found out that it would cost me NOTHING to start selling. I had been sure that the starter kit would cost something, but was glad to learn that the I could receive $500 in product for hosting a starter show ($350 kit plus $150 in product credit).

It really was easy. I invited all the (local) people I could think of (60!!) and had an average turn out (13!). I reached the sales goal ($350) with the starter show orders and earned my starter kit for FREE.

With all the people I had invited to my starter show who couldn't make it and with orders from people at work, I was able to "host" another show just through catalog orders! This helped me out a lot b/c they ask that you have 6 shows in your first 2 months. Now I've booked the remaining 5 shows and can't wait to show people all the candle stuff I got for FREE!

Last Tuesday I went to my first PartyLite team meeting and got more free candles and PL logo stuff! I had fun while learning a lot! Somethings I learned and want to share...
