Thank You

Thanksgiving Thoughts

  1. Do you say, "Thank You" when someone holds the door for you? Do you say, "Thank You" when someone picks up something you dropped? Does anyone still write Thank You notes?
  2. Today I received a group Thank You email from one of my bosses. He's on a cruise ship in the Atlantic so he ended his email with "And thank you for holding down the ship as we are on ours!"
  3. Interestingly enough I woke up thinking about thankfulness for my job. So I wrote back to my boss and told him how thankful I was for God providing me with this job. Five or so years ago I knew nothing about financial planning - they've taught me a lot!
  4. I've blogged about Thankfulness before, but I noticed my November posts were a bit lacking. This is my 2nd post for the month so I'm doing better than last year. Two years ago I posted a bit more in the month of November.
  5. I'm in charge of Thanksgiving for my Dad, Mom and me. We're not having a turkey. Yep, it's true - we're having steak! I'm fixing some stuffing though, just to keep a little tradition alive.
  6. Like many of my friends I've been posting Thankfulness posts on Facebook:
  • 11/17 Thankful for Saturdays. Got my car washed and vacuumed out. Ran errands and figured out Thanksgiving menu for Mom, Dad & me. Babysat 3 munchkins named Sue, Brick & and Axel - j/k that's not their names! ...Went to bed early and forgot to post this!
  • 11/16 I'm thankful for spontaneous friends. Thanks for hanging out with me last night, Alicia Maart! I'm also thankful for busy friends...hmmhmm, Lindsay Tuttle Levang :)
  • 11/14 Thankful for task lists. I got to cross off a bunch of tasks today and after the day I had yesterday, it felt really good! I even got a couple of "good job" and "thank you" s.
  • 11/13 My head hurts from all that I had to do today and for all that I left to do tomorrow. But if it wasn't for all that work I probably wouldn't appreciate the non-headache times as much. Thankful for the work God has provided me. It was refreshing to see Doug-Marie McLachlan today in the middle of my crazy.
  • 11/12 Thankful for warm commutes on the bus. It was chilly and snowy out there today!
  • 11/11 I'm thankful for my godly heritage, for past and present Christ-like examples to follow, and for my church. The following quote from MatthewandKimberly Morrell is what stuck with me from yesterday morning's message: "Faith with just words is powerless." I'd never heard it phrased this way, but it helped me understand James 2:14-26 a little better.
  • 11/10 Thankful that I did my Cinderella duties Thur and Fri so I could enjoy my day off :)
  • 11/8 Thankful for surprise visits at work. Nice to see you, Jess! :)
  • 11/7 Thankful for my free gym at work!
  • 11/6 read this today in my online journal from 446 days ago so I thought I'd share it for today's thankful post: I'm thankful that I have a job. I'm thankful that my job has taught me a lot. I'm thankful for the skills God is allowing me to use at my job. I'm thankful that my boss and co-workers are Christians. I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to share my testimony with a co-worker today.
  • 11/5 Thankful that, "Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it."
  • 11/4 Thankful for the roof over my head and my car that drives like a dream. :)
  • 11/3 I'm thankful for all the Thankful Posts. It's refreshing and encouraging! Keep it up, friends!!
  • 11/2 Thankful for my mom. Praying her heart procedure goes well today and the doctors know what to do to help her mitro valve.
  • 11/1 Thankful for Metro Women's Center's ministry. Enjoyed attending the celebration event tonight! Thanks to those who have partnered with me and donated money.

{thanK you notes}

{Edit: I wrote most of this last week, but didn't get a chance to post it. Today, after I had an interesting chat at church with a lady about people not being thankful,
I had to finish it up and post it!!)

After reading this article I was once again prompted that I hadn't yet sent out birthday or Christmas gift Thank You notes. One would think that writing thank you notes would be a simple task especially when one has been brought up to write said notes, and that writing notes would be especially easy when one has been in the habit of it in the past. But for some reason I have been slacking in this area lately.

Last year I blogged my thank you notes as well, but I did it in a much, much more timely fashion.

Please forgive my tardiness.

  • Dear Jess & Luke, Thank you, thank you for the workout bag. I use it (almost) everyday and it has been a necessary and helpful tool for my work outs 3-5 times each week.  Thank you also for the "How to Eat for $2 Day" book. I read the introduction and have skimmed some of the recipes. There are lots of good ideas and helpful tips! Thank you!!

  • Dear  Carsten  -   The pictures you colored for me are my favorite! :) Thank you, CarJack!

  • Dear Jen, Eric and gang, So the weight lifting book you got me...um...yeah, I haven't read it yet. I am thankful that you got it for me and I plan to dive into soon-ish. I'm currently focusing my work outs on consistency of when I do it and once I nail down the habit, I'm going to branch out on what I do for my work outs. This book will give me a great start to that next step so thank you!!

  • Dear  Mom & Dad, Well, you certainly know the way to this little girl's heart - cold hard cash, er, plastic! Thank you for the cash gift card. It was definitely a help...especially with the price of gas these days! Also, it was such a delight to travel only 2 hours to your house for Christmas. All of us enjoyed the short drive this year instead of the 9 hour drive. The family fun was memorable and the food was yummy! Thanks, too, for the small red crock! And I'm really sad, but I kinda broke the lid already... :(

  • Dear Meg & Jake and Lily - The instructions in the card said "try something new this year" and so the Starbucks gift card was a fun idea! But, no, I didn't get coffee :) I did take a friend out for coffee and that was fun and kind of different ;) Thanks for the gift!

  • Dear Anna, Thank you for the Amazon gift card. I was able to purchase several e-books and songs which was great!!!!

  • Dear Landlords, You're not going to believe it (especially since I almost don't), but the beautiful red poinsettia you gave me at the beginning of December is still alive. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! I don't have a green thumb, but I enjoy the challenge of seeing how long I can keep a plant from drowning to death (my usual MO).

  • Dear Morgen Rae, Thank you for the painted snowman. He's very cute! I'll think you often when I see it on my shelf. Also, the pictures you colored for me are my favorite! :) You're such an artist! Thank you, Mo'gen!

How about you? did you send out Thank You notes or blog them?!

{tis the Season}

Found this little diddy in my unpublished list...looks like I started it the beginning of December, but didn't quite finish it...Well, I'm posting it anyway...

**************************************

As we move from the Season of Thanksgiving to the Season of Give Me, I mean Giving.I wanted to make sure to take a few minutes to write down some things that I'm thankful for this year.

I'm thankful for...

My family - my parents recently moved from 9 hours away to 2 hours away. Ahhh, so great!

My car - poor thing is on the end of it's long journey, but I'm hoping it lasts a bit longer.

My job: tasks, projects, boss, workspace, coworkers, free gym. All things things make my days go by quickly and help me never to be bored with my job.

Hot water, electricity,

thank you notes

It's been kind of busy around here-what with all my days off and now I'm back to work-canyoubelieveit?! So now I'm getting around to my Thank You notes from all the gifts I got for my birthday and Christmas. I am handwriting some of these for the non-blog friends, but for the rest of you, here goes!
Dear Liz B - My niece and I really enjoyed the delicious muffins you left at my door! What a treat! :) Thanks, neighbor!!

Dear Dan & Tracy - My niece and I (also) really enjoyed the delicious hot chocolate you gave me in that cute jar! You should have seen the chocolate-y mess we were after slurping the remaining chocolate chips that were melted on the bottom of the cup! Yum! :D

Dear Laurel - The poinsettia you gave me is still alive! :) I love it! I think they’re great gifts, but I’ve never bought one for ME! Thank you so much, my co-worker & friend!!

Dear Lindsay - What to buy, what to buy?! So many options on how to spend the ITunes gift card, I haven’t made up my mind yet!! I’ll take suggestions!

Dear Jess, Luke & Anna - A converter box!! Just what every girl dreams of! Thanks for helping take a way my winter blues I can watch TV again!! :) P.S. I even hooked it up myself! Believe it!

Dear Jake, Meg & Lily - thank you for the Target gift card for my birthday!! I bought some new socks to keep me warm the rest of this winter! I’m so glad you got to come up and spend so much time here this Christmas. Hopefully I can plan a trip to NC sometime soon!

Dear Jen, Eric & Co - Y’all throw great birthday parties! Thanks so much for mine ;) I love my new gloves - I wear them a lot these days!! Oh, and thank you, thank you for the DVD player for Christmas! My movie watching experiences are, oh, so much more enjoyable when it doesn’t stop playing in the middle of the movie!! P.S. I’m now quite the techno pro (NOT!), so I hooked it up myself! ;)

Dear Whiz - Ah-so! Thank you for the Korean gifts - I’m still debating if I should use the purse or save it :) ...I think I’ll use it! Glad you’re back for a visit and could take our family pictures too!! Thanks for spending some of your precious moments with us Flamings!!

Dear Anna G - The Carmel PD marketing materials were awesome! I'm already using the key chain!! I'm stocked for a long while on pens now too, thanks to you! You're the best ;)
Dear Mom & Dad - You’re time here in Minneapolis was short/long/short - what I mean is that the time Mom was sick was probably really “long” to you but the bookending-”well” days were short. We did manage to squeeze some fun in though, eh?! (Bowling, pictures, presents and more!) Thanks for the framed song, I’m still deciding where to hang it, but I think I’ll put it next to the quilt hanging that matches my bed quilt.

Lots of love, b~
What about you? Did you handwrite Thank You notes, send an email or FB message, say "Thanks" at the time of receiving, or none of the above?!

P.S I can hardly believe it, but I forgot a thank you note!

Dear Luke - please forgive me for not remembering to write a thank you for the Bath & Body gift card you gave me for Christmas! Oh, trust me, I've already spent it! stocking upon lotions and soap, of course! Thank you, thank you!!

miles of smiles & a few tears

I planned a last minute trip to visit a dear, dear friend to "get away from it all" and also to be an encouragement to my friend.

What I expected was a trip with a change of pace, a vacation from my work-eat-sleep, work-eat-sleep routine. I expected to catch up with my friend who I hadn't seen in 2 years, learn about her new life in Colorado, help with her kids, and just plain enjoy being with my friend Danna.

What I got was all that and more!

Saturday - woke up at 4:15a to get to my 7:05a flight. Arrived in Denver at 8:30 and we hit the ground running! Danna and Gang picked me up and we headed back to the "ranch". They're currently living with Danna's brother's family who happened to be on vacation for almost 2 weeks...leaving behind 1 dog, 1 cat, 12 chickens, and a huge garden that needed water!

We arrived at the ranch and the Dumplin' Gang scattered to their usual... Kelli, age 9, loves to read. She probably read 3 or 4 books while I was there. She also loves to swing on the tire swing that creeks with an annoying sound [kerr-erk! kerr-erk! kerr-erk!]. Karis, age 6, always heads for the chicken coup: she loves to carry "Fluffy" around like a sack of potatoes!! Ryan, age 4, just loves to bug and he's got 3 sisters, so he's good at it too! Little Selah, age 2, who acts like she's 3, she loves to sing. Whatever she's doing, she's got a song going while she's doing it. [You love me, You love me, We're a happy family...You love me, You love me, We're a happy family...] One more time, Selah-baby! :0)

That evening, after a delicious dinner of Danna's famous Calico Beans, we headed to the local fireworks to meet up with a group from church. We arrived a little late so we were lucky to find a parking spot. We found the group and were warmly welcomed! The fireworks were delightfully choreographed to patriotic and other fun music, but they were a little loud for Karis - she had her head buried under jackets and blankets. She made it through like a champ and then while we were waiting for the traffic to clear out, she enjoyed playing with a sparkler from some people we didn't know. All the kids had fun playing with their new friends.

Sunday we were all exhausted from our late night and swooped into church right as the preaching began. Kelli took the two youngest down to class and Danna headed to the cry room with Karis. There wasn't a seat for me in the cry room so I slipped into the auditorium to hopefully get a blessing.

To my surprise, I not only got a blessing, but a challenge to my thinking! The speaker was just getting into his message about work. Work?! I don't want to hear about work, I thought. Here's the outline:

Get...to Work
Proverbs 6:6

I. Work is given to us...
A. As a good gift from a loving God.
B. As an opportunity to serve others.
C. As an opportunity to partner with God.
D. As an opportunity to be like God.

(Work was hard before the fall. God cursed the ground which brought thorns & thistles.)

II. In your service of others...
A. Thorns and thistles are produced easier than wheat.
B. Thorns and thistles drive you back to dependence on God.
C. Thorns and thistles train and prepare you for future service.

Application
- Some jobs are not for Christians.
- Choose work carefully...don't choose for what it can do for you but what it can do for others.
- Retirement is not a biblical term. There's only a change of service.
- Trust God to place you in the area of service he wants you in.
- Trust God to place you in the perfect timing in your work.
- I need to change my thinking from "work is a necessary evil".

Sunday late in the afternoon we headed to downtown Denver. Neither Danna, nor I had been there before so we weren't sure what to expect. We found directions online for something called 16th Street Mall. Turns out it was a fun, outdoor mall with street vendors in the middle of the road. Also turns out there was a Jamba Juice, which Danna claims Kelli is made out of, so that was our first stop! Our second stop was a bathroom for 2 of the kids. We then started to explore the mall but were quickly distracted by Karis' interest in a horse & buggy. After a short inquiry, we all climbed aboard and had a half-hour tour of downtown Denver! Everyone enjoyed the ride so we decided to end our trip downtown on this high note. Side note: as we were heading out, Danna mentioned she hadn't started to water the garden yet (this usually takes most of the day). My serious reply was, "It's Sunday! God will provide!" Even though I meant what I said, I truly did not know I was speaking as a prophet! On our way home from downtown, it began to rain, pouring rain!! Jehovah Jirah, God will provide!

Monday was possibly going to be a trip to Garden of the Gods and Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, but a call from church friends with an invitation to hang out at a pool easily changed our plans. We were all excited to get a little extra vitamin D, especially me!! That evening Kelli had a friend over and we made a little campfire and s'mores in the cool of the evening. The ranch has several pine trees in the yard, so there were plenty of pine cones to add a little extra spark!

Tuesday was the last day of my visit, so we were all a little sad. I did have a college friend come by and take me to lunch (thank you , Jeni!!) so that brightened the day for me, but not so much for the Dumplin' Gang. They wanted to go with me, of course! :) Jeni and I had fun catching up on ol' times and what we've been doing in the 12 years since we last saw each other.

Back at the ranch it got a little crazy before heading out by 3:15 to get me to the airport: little Ry Guy got his feeling hurt and spent a while in a room...; Karis collected "berries" from a bush outside to make a smoothie, but that didn't that didn't end well; and Selah ended up in tears, but I can't remember why... Kind of made it a little stressful for the Gang's mama, but somehow we made it out the door on time! We even had time for a couple of detours: Gap & Wendy's!

I was definitely sad to end my visit. I miss them all already!! I hope it's not 2 years before I see them again!! MSP to DEN seems to have decent ticket prices, so we'll see...!!

I had a neat answer to prayer today!

"...pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
James 5:16

Last night as I got home I discovered my keys to my apt/mail box/work were missing. They’re on a separate ring from my car keys, plus I had my sister’s house keys still attached to my car keys (they’re in California for the week). I figured my keys dropped off between the time I got out of my car at the park & ride that morning and when I got on the bus. I was late getting home (as I had ran two errands on my way home) so I didn’t want to go back to the park & ride that night when I wasn’t really sure what happened. I looked around my parking spot at the apartment and then went to my sister’s to get my second set of keys. Thankfully I didn’t lose their keys too!

I let one of the girls (Lindsay) in my apartment building know that my keys were lost. At this point I wasn’t sure if my sister had keys to my building or just my apartment. I got to my sisters’ and found both keys! I remembered later that I had to ask my landlord for an additional key to the building when I first moved in. I forgot that I actually got the key! Yay for planning ahead! So then I went home and let the apartment girls (Lindsay & Elizabeth) know I got in and ask them to be on the lookout for my keys. They offered me pizza and said they would be praying! I was very thankful for the pizza!

This morning as I drove to the park & ride I prayed the whole way. I drove to the area in which I normally park and as I searched for a spot I looked around for my keys too. I then parked and started my serious search. I didn’t remember exactly which spot I had parked in, and wasn’t sure how my keys would still be there if that’s where I had dropped them. But to my surprise, I soon spotted a shining lump on the ground; it was just next to an SUV and right where they must have dropped from my key ring yesterday morning. I was so shocked I just calmly walked over and picked them up. I stared at them in my hand as I walked to the enclosed waiting area of the bus stop. With reality sinking in and excitement brewing, I decided to text Lindsay to let her know the good news and thank her for praying!

Another lady waiting for the bus asked me what time the next bus came. I told her and then shared my good news. She said, "Someone must be looking out for you!" I told her I was thanking my friend for praying for me [via text]! I hope she understood that I was giving God the credit!!

This verse was in my email inbox this morning (I subscribe to a daily email devotional) and I wanted to share it too:
"But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them. LORD, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart's desire is to glorify your name."
Isaiah 26:7–8

thanKful

"In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."
I Thessalonians 5:18
Singing with Thankfulness
This morning as I left for work, I was reminded to be thankful. Yes, I know we already had Thanksgiving, but my reminder to be thankful often comes when I get into my car. A friend of mine used to make up songs to sing for her K4/K5 classes and one of them was "Thank you, Lord for my _______" -- you fill in the blank. The song basically repeats several times and ends with "right where you are!" Anyway, this little song comes to mind regularly when I'm driving, so the first thing I usually fill in the blank with, is my car. And now you know :0)

Thank You, Lord for...

"Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching." Hebrews 10:25
A friend loves at all times...Proverbs 17:17a

This is a great starter as a prayer list! I'm so needing to remember to pray for and thank God for those people and things He has put in my life!

What would you add?
