{3 special littles}

On My Heart

Tonight I'm praying
for the three
in this picture
you can't
see.

Even though you
can't see
them,
God can.

These boys
came into my
family's life
just over
and none
of us have been
the same
since.

Around here
(blog, fb)
they're known as
E
V
and F.

Such cuties,
such characters,
so loved,
so ours.

Yes, ours.

Even though
they're not with us
in person
they are forever
in our hearts.

Please pray
with me and
my family
for these special
littles
tonight,
for always.

{lesson on how to pray}

Sunday evening's sermon by Sam Horn was part 2. Here's part 1 which I didn't hear since I was home sick.

I'm including my notes, but I don't know that it does the actual sermon justice or explain how much this has impacted my prayer life in the last 24 hours.

Matthew 6:9-15
9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.10  Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.11  Give us this day our daily bread.12 And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.13 And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

A Patter to Guide Our Prayers
  • who we ought to pray to
    • to God Himself
    • not to humans
  • what are we to pray for
    • something true in heaven that we want to see on earth
A Patter Reveals A Set of Priorities
  • adjust our prayers to reflect these priorities
    • exaltation of God's name
    • excecution of God's righteous will to be done
Petitions
  • daily provisions
    • ask, why do I want more if I haven't used what He gave me already
    • for His purposes
  • forgiveness
  • protection
Attributes
  • you'll never exhaust Him

{Book Review} Your Money God’s Way by Aime Streater

For the past 10 years I have been trying to get out of debt. Realistically, I have been seriously trying for the past four years. I am very close to reaching one specific financial goal and I think the fact that I’m so close that goal has given me a little inspiration.

Several months back I chose to review the book Your Money God’s Way by Aime Streater through BookSneeze.com, but only got through the first chapter before it was laid aside and kind of forgotten about. Recently I picked it up again in hopes that I could finish a review and get another book and I was surprised (in a good way) to find lots of things to help me reach the finish line of the specific financial goal I mentioned above.

I’m going to post this review in two sections because 1) I've finished reading half of the book and 2) since this has turned into more of a Bible study for me rather than a normal Book Review, it's going to be a little longer than unusual...

Book Description

“Amie Streater…delivers a powerful message of common sense and biblical wisdom that today’s churchgoers desperately need.” - Dave Ramsey
Readers discover the seven "counterfeit convictions" that keep them broke and encounter proven plans for getting out of debt, building wealth, and finding financial peace.
Money habits. Where do they come from? Can you pinpoint when you started shopping to feel better, why you can’t usher grown children into financial independence, or why saving for the future is a priority in theory but not in practice?
Amie Streater, associate pastor of financial stewardship for the 10,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, has been there. From her own experience, she knows what it’s like to look at an impossible pile of bills and a pile of toddlers wrestling in the next room. In Your Money God's Way, empowered by her own incredible journey to financial freedom, she leads readers to the dream of mastering their finances. She also expertly uncovers seven “counterfeit convictions” Christians believe that hinder their personal finance success.
Book Review

From the start I think the author is harsh in her analysis of what Christians should do to be good financial stewards, but I think it’s necessary. She found “that it takes more than just teaching steps to get out of debt—it takes confrontation of the wrong thinking that got them there to begin with.”

Counterfeit Convictions is first chapter and the book concludes with Conviction Clean-Up Plan. The middle chapters describe the author’s view of “seven key spiritual conditions most often cause Christians to fail in meeting personal financial goals”:

  1. The Fix-It Fantasy: Unrealistic, unbiblical beliefs about the power money has to improve our lives
  2. Saviors or Enablers?: A habit of trying be a savior by continually bailing reckless people out of their messes, and waiting our own resources in the process
  3. Self-Righteous Slackers: Polluted theology, which we use to mask laziness and justify not working or failing to work up to our full potential
  4. You Must Be Here to Help Me!: Naïveté about the intentions of others.
  5. God Is an ATM: Failure to give, or a tendency to give with the wrong intentions
  6. The Scarlette Syndrome: Denial about our current circumstances of the consequences of our actions
  7. The Cliff Jumpers: A tendency to blame God for our own impulsive behavior

Introduction

One thing that stuck out in her introduction was “Your wealth—or lack thereof—is a direct result of the decisions you have made regarding every dollar that has passed through your hands.” Uhh…she said “every dollar”!

I was encouraged by this prayer and intend to pray it often:

Daily Prayer

Dear Jesus, thank You for loving me, for staying beside me, for holding me up when I fall. Please give me an open mind and an open heart. Let me see things as You see them. Show me what’s truth. Show me where I am wrong. Open the doors You want me to walk through, and close the ones that lead to places You don’t want me to be.

Please bless my efforts to improve my finances. Multiply my resources, and bless me so I may be a blessing to others. Most important, line up my thoughts with Your thoughts. Help me forgive myself for the mistakes of my pat, and forgive others for mistakes against me, just as You forgive me for all my sins as soon as I ask. I release the mistakes of yesterday, and I receive the blessing You have for me today.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Chapter 1 – Counterfeit Convictions
In this chapter I was challenged to highlight the scriptures used so that they will provide a quick reference for me to do as the Berean Christians did in Acts 17:11.

The author explained counterfeit convictions as “beliefs that started out as biblical truths but that we absorb into our hearts incorrectly.”

Here’s the first one she mentions:
Counterfeit Conviction: “I can’t really afford this, but I’ll just put it on my credit card. When the bill comes, God will provide!”

Timeless truth: Proverbs 21:17 tells us, “HE who loves pleasure will be a poor man; he who loves wine and oil will not be rich.”

A daily prayer:
Father God, I acknowledge that my current financial habits may be inconsistent with what Your Word teaches because my current financial condition does not line up with the promise of the Bible. God, open my heart and my mind to new ideas and fresh thinking. Help me to see what You want me to see, when You want me to see it. Father, bless my efforts to become financially healthy, and let my decisions bless my family and honor You.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Chapter 2 – The Fix-It Fantasy

While Chapter 1 set the stage for the next 7 chapters, Chapter 2 jumped right in to the main idea from this chapter to me was the power of negative words in your life, and replacing negative thinking with Scripture truths is the key to reversing the effects of those negative words.

A couple of quotes I pulled from the chapter:
·         “If you’re not grateful for what you have now, you won’t be grateful with more.” Contentment is happiness, not more stuff.
·         “See your setback as a temporary circumstance and not a permanent condition.” It’s easy to get into the “permanent condition” mindset. But by reversing your thinking, you will be more positive. To be more positive, you will need to add Scripture to your thinking.
·         “The only thing that can truly change you is the power of God.” Again, more Scripture in your life is key!

A daily prayer:
Dear God, please help me see money the way You see it. And show me that You value me right now for who I am and for who You created me to be. Give me the wisdom and the patience to multiply my resources so that I can be a blessing to others. Let me value my life in terms of the amount of love I give and receive, and not by the number of dollars I have in the bank. Show me what money can do, and just as important, what it cannot do. Help me to find peace and my safety in You, and only You.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Chapter 3 - Saviors or Enablers?

Counterfeit Conviction: It is my Christian duty to be at the beck and call of everyone who wants me to help them out of a jam.

Timeless Truth: You have to take care of yourself if you’re going to be in a position to help anyone else. And the world is full of people who live to take advantage of generous souls. Generosity and a desire to be helpful to others must be coupled with wisdom and discernment.

While I like to think of myself as a generous person, I know don’t have anyone in my life taking advantage of my generosity and I also don’t believe I generally give more than I can afford so this chapter was somewhat not applicable to me. However, she did raise some good points for when you are in these types of situations and there were two things that stuck out to me:

·         Establish a budget in which your tithe and your most immediate needs (food, clothing, shelter, [and] transportation) are covered first, followed by your secondary goals and obligations (retirement savings, debt elimination, mortgage payoff acceleration, [and] vacation savings). You cannot give away money that you do not have.
·         Set aside a monthly amount to use for “spontaneous” giving or helping others. If after making your budget you don’t have money left over, then you are about to get a crash course in saying no.

Chapter 4 - Self-Righteous Slackers

Counterfeit Conviction: God didn’t want me to go to work…My responsibilities will be met somehow.

Timeless Truth: Laziness does not honor God; neither is it His plan for your life. However, God always blesses hard work and dedication.

Some themes of the chapter included:
  • The author was certainly passionate about telling those she has counseled that it was a privilege for women to be stay at home moms/wives, not a right. If one chose to get in debt (i.e. for education – student loans) then one should contribute to the effort to pay those debts off.
  • Caution against get-rich-quick schemes. Proverbs 21:5
  • Encouragement to “work up to our full potential”- maybe even sacrifice a little now to ultimately get to do a job that we desire.
  • Using more than just one of our talents if God closes the door to the one we’ve always done (be the tweezers or pliers in the Swiss army knife instead of just a knife).

Pray for my work life:

Father God, I thank You for the gifts and talents with which You have blessed me. Please help me use these gifts to make a living for myself and for my family, to bless others, and to honor and glorify You. Break off any barriers in my hear that keep me from working up to my fullest potential. Give me a strong work ethic, energy for the day, patience for the tasks before me, and grace to handle my job with a smile. Bless the work of my hands, Lord, and please bless the job searches of everyone who is out of work right now.

In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Bottom line: “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Colossians 3:23

I hope to post the conclusion of this review in the next week or so.

This was from last Thursday but I saved it in my inbox to revisit. Thought I'd share:

Today's Verse - Matthew 6:9-13 from the New Living Translation

"'Pray like this:
Our Father in heaven,
may your name be kept holy.
May your Kingdom come soon.
May your will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.
Give us today the food we need,
and forgive us our sins,
as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
And don't let us yield to temptation,
but rescue us from the evil one.'"

encouragement for today

This prayer can become the pattern for all prayer. First, the focus is on God—who he is (our Father), where he is (in heaven, the perfect place). It's about his kingdom and his will, to be done on earth as it is in the perfect place. Once we have the proper focus, then we ask for material needs (which are legitimate), and also our spiritual needs (just as important). Our main spiritual needs are forgiveness and deliverance from temptation and evil. The template: God's agenda, our needs (physical and spiritual), and relationships with God and others.

I had a neat answer to prayer today!

"...pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."
James 5:16

Last night as I got home I discovered my keys to my apt/mail box/work were missing. They’re on a separate ring from my car keys, plus I had my sister’s house keys still attached to my car keys (they’re in California for the week). I figured my keys dropped off between the time I got out of my car at the park & ride that morning and when I got on the bus. I was late getting home (as I had ran two errands on my way home) so I didn’t want to go back to the park & ride that night when I wasn’t really sure what happened. I looked around my parking spot at the apartment and then went to my sister’s to get my second set of keys. Thankfully I didn’t lose their keys too!

I let one of the girls (Lindsay) in my apartment building know that my keys were lost. At this point I wasn’t sure if my sister had keys to my building or just my apartment. I got to my sisters’ and found both keys! I remembered later that I had to ask my landlord for an additional key to the building when I first moved in. I forgot that I actually got the key! Yay for planning ahead! So then I went home and let the apartment girls (Lindsay & Elizabeth) know I got in and ask them to be on the lookout for my keys. They offered me pizza and said they would be praying! I was very thankful for the pizza!

This morning as I drove to the park & ride I prayed the whole way. I drove to the area in which I normally park and as I searched for a spot I looked around for my keys too. I then parked and started my serious search. I didn’t remember exactly which spot I had parked in, and wasn’t sure how my keys would still be there if that’s where I had dropped them. But to my surprise, I soon spotted a shining lump on the ground; it was just next to an SUV and right where they must have dropped from my key ring yesterday morning. I was so shocked I just calmly walked over and picked them up. I stared at them in my hand as I walked to the enclosed waiting area of the bus stop. With reality sinking in and excitement brewing, I decided to text Lindsay to let her know the good news and thank her for praying!

Another lady waiting for the bus asked me what time the next bus came. I told her and then shared my good news. She said, "Someone must be looking out for you!" I told her I was thanking my friend for praying for me [via text]! I hope she understood that I was giving God the credit!!

*************
This verse was in my email inbox this morning (I subscribe to a daily email devotional) and I wanted to share it too:
"But for those who are righteous, the way is not steep and rough. You are a God who does what is right, and you smooth out the path ahead of them. LORD, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws; our heart's desire is to glorify your name."
Isaiah 26:7–8

God In My Life

God shows himself everyday but are we looking?
God gives himself everyday but are we taking?
God communicates himself every day but are we listening?

I see God in the weather and in people that I meet.
I take God to work and everywhere I go.
I hear God in his Word and those who speak with His wisdom.

Do you see God in me?
Do you know God from me?
Do you hear God out of me?

regions hospital - adam (age 18)

My first trip to downtown St. Paul by myself was to visit my coworker and her son. Mary's son, Adam, was in the hospital because of a car accident where he was a passenger. The accident happened in St Paul on Sunday afternoon, Oct 7th. He suffered internal injuries and his right hip/pelvis was shattered. The hip was repaired in an 8-hour surgery with 23 pins and 5 plates. He went home after 10 days in the hospital, but it will take months for him to recover.

I was able to visit Adam, Mary and their family in the hospital three times the first week he was in the hospital. Mary hasn't been back to work since the accident. She didn't leave the hospital except to shower a few times and, I think, 2 nights out of 10 to sleep in her own bed. I'm sure she's glad to be at home in her own bed now, but we still don't know when she'll be back to work.

edit 11/2/08: four weeks after the accident my co-worker is still not back to work. She's still at home taking care of her son. Pray for the family as they adjust and that they will be able to schedule someone to take care of Adam so Mary can come back to work.

love never fails

This weekend I had the privilege of attending and participating in a beautiful restoration ceremony for my friends, Danna & Paul in Atlanta, Georgia.

I landed in Atlanta during rush hour on Friday evening. Paul picked me up from the airport and I realized quickly we were going to have an adventurous ride (especially as I became close friends with several bumpers...apparently Paul is known for his tickets in the mail :) I did arrive safe and sound at Danna's house and entered into the ever-delightful Henkelman Zoo.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner and caught up on the happenings of each other midst the din of four energetic children, two (maybe three) curious cats, and six chatty adults (Danna's parents and sister, Kelley, were also there).

Next on the agenda was getting everyone over to the chapel where the ceremony was to be held for a little set up/rehearsal. The kids loved practicing and using the mic to recite their verse (or in Karis's (age 4) case, "wadies and gintilminnnn!"). Kelli (age 7 almost 8) had memorized verses in I Cor 13 and Ryan (age 2) assisted at the very end. They practiced this many times and always at the end Ryan would say his part and then leap from the stage. So cute, and so many times. We had no doubt he would jump off the stage on Saturday too!

After the rehearsal it was off to Target for a few candles for decoration and then home to assist with the bedtime rituals. Danna, Kelley, Paul and I enjoyed more catching up after everyone else was in bed.

Saturday morning started off later than I thought it would, and that was a good thing! :) We spent the morning getting the house and ourselves ready and then we headed out the door for the ceremony...on time, which surprised us all!

The ceremony began with a welcome from Paul & Danna's counselor and then a word from Paul. After Paul spoke, I sang Grace by Carolyn Hamlin. Kelli & Ryan then recited a scripture passage and Ryan did NOT jump off the stage! He said his part very well: "Wuv nebur fails!" and then calmly walked off the stage.

We then heard a message from Paul & Danna's Sunday School teacher and that was followed by a powerful video presentation of Third Day's "Love Song". Danna and Paul exchanged vows and then Kelley sang an emotional "Come to Jesus". Then those in attendance were asked to participate by promising to love, encourage, and pray for the family.

After the ceremony a small reception was hosted at Paul & Danna's where the members of their Sunday School class provided food. Also a couple who Danna & Paul had never met until that day but had been praying for them during the past several months, drove from Tennessee, I think, to attend the ceremony and bring punch to serve. They also took a few pics of Selah as he is a photographer.

Another friend from childhood, Dana, was able to join in the festivities. She arrived from Tennessee as well just in time to jump in the van and head to the church with us. We had a great time playing/hanging out with Danna's kids. The day ended with us (Danna, Kelley, Paul, Dana & I) entertaining each other with stories of the good ol' days and then later some very funny YouTube videos: Brian Regan, Tim Hawkins, Terry Fator, etc.

Sunday morning we went to Danna & Paul's church and heard a great sermon on Psalm 119. From the comments made after church everyone came away with something special from the service.

I was very glad to be a part of this special time for my dear friend Danna. Love you guys!

I Cor 13:4-8a

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
